Surya offers a social or fund-raising event for organisations and groups.

BraceletTo such an event Surya brings an "amazingly large" selection of gemstone and silver jewellery and a small collection of scarves.

The display is very large and includes traditional and modern styles.   Everyone is invited to freely enjoy the jewellery and try on anything, experimenting with new ideas and styles.
The items are all very attractively priced.

It is the Surya philosophy to provide for every budget from £2 to £200 so that everyone could make a purchase should they wish to.   There is never any  pressure to make a purchase and participants are free to simply enjoy the occasion.

There is usually a short talk which is related to the business, further emphasising that the event is not simply a retail sale. Many organisers request an extended talk; such a talk is about aspects of travel and business in India.   It shares a love of the country demonstrated by stories told from a personal point of view and includes people met and situations encountered.   The talk is adapted to the needs of the event and the time available. There are different talks for organisations who request repeat events.

Surya makes no charge for the event and further offers to supply tickets and posters should these be requested.

At the end of the event Surya makes a donation of a percentage of the profit of the evening.

It is regretted that Surya can not take part in a stall event because of the size of the Surya display and because it is not possible to breakdown the display to fit onto a single stall or small space.

Practicalities

Surya brings to the event all display materials and lighting, but welcomes tables where they are available and in place; 6/8 trestle tables prove ideal.    An electrical supply with 13 amp sockets is necessary.

Since there is a lot to be unloaded, much of which is heavy, easy access with the minimum of stairs is appreciated.   If there is a problem with this a discussion usually solves it.

To ensure that the display is set and the event ready to welcome its guests Surya asks that there is access to the location one and a half to two hours prior to the start time.

These notes are provided to help but we welcome you to discuss anything personally.

Suggestions for fund-raising events

A Surya event can easily become a fund raising event particularly if the event host organises a few extras, for example:
  • charge for tickets or use invitations which note an entry donation of a certain amount will be expected - this is particularly appropriate when there is a talk which is advertised on the ticket/invitation
  • offer wine as part of the entrance fee and invite donations for an extra glass (NB licensing laws)
  • provide refreshments which can be sold to the participants at a profit.
  • include refreshments with an increased ticket/entrance price
  • organise the event as an occasion including a meal.  This can be anything from luncheon to afternoon tea or an Indian meal supplied by a local restaurant
  • include other fund raisers such as a raffle (to which Surya makes a donation) a bottle stall, tombola, guess the weight, gift tree etc.

Finally

We ask you to read the section About Surya and in addition to this we would like to emphasise the following points which are the essentials of Surya
  • Surya only deals with suppliers known personally who operate ethically and all items are personally selected
  • The pricing structure is based on lower than normal profit margins
  • All goods are guaranteed and should any fault be found through normal wear and tear there is a no quibble refund or replacement policy
  • Surya was founded on mutual trust and this is basic to its philosophy
